performance proposal

media: performance, participatory

equipment required: index cards, pens, mobile phone with speakerphone capabilities

for my performance piece, i will distribute index cards to the class and instruct them to write down instructions and phrases. i will then make a prank phone call to someone while working in what the cards say. class members can give me their cards at any time before or during the performance.

my main sources of influence are the "whose line" game from whose line is it anyway? and "black friday shopping prank" from impractical jokers. links to those videos are below

personal criteque & reflection - video project

my main inspiration for this piece was drawn from old disney animations. every frame of which consists of 2 separate paintings: the background painting, and the cell with characters and props. this is done to save time and resources, as a single background painting can be used for an entire scene. it would be incredibly inefficient to paint a new background for each frame. this combination of separate backgrounds and foregrounds is what inspired me to make this piece. i took this concept, and replaced the background painting with video, and the foreground cells with my own crude drawings.
my piece was changed significantly since my proposal. my original intention was to have the drawings pre-drawn on transparencies and change them along with the video.  this was compromised because i was unable to find transparencies.  my idea was changed from changing pre-drawn transparencies to drawing the pictures live and erasing them as the video changed.  despite adding to my performance, i felt that this change hurt my project. i was too rushed drawing the pictures, and if i made the videos longer i would have exceeded the time limit. if i were to do this project again, i would do the same piece, but iron out all the technical details. i would have better diffused the light from the overhead projector as to see the background videos more clearly. as previously stated, i would have used pre-drawn transparencies.  there was a great risk involved as i did not have an opportunity to practice my piece. the biggest critique i got was to practice the performance aspect ahead of time. this is a fair critique and i agree with it. overall i felt that i my piece was successful in entertaining the class. classmates appeared to be engaged and entertained, and could clearly see the vision I was trying to execute.
