installation piece- personal criteque and reflection

i frequently monitored the canvas within the first few days of installing it. in this time, no one contributed to the piece. this was discouraging and i was worried no one would contribute for the entirety of the installation. luckily people did start drawing eventually. the drawings were clearly drawn in different styles indicating that several people contributed.

when looking at the piece, one notices that none of the drawings overlap. this could be because people did not want to infringe on someone else's space.

an addition i did not expect was extra tape around the corners to reinforce the canvas.
if i were to do this piece again, i would have a higher quality canvas on a stand. with the high risk of this installation being taken down, i went with much cheaper materials.

overall i thought this piece was successful. although i am upset that the charcoal was stolen, i am glad that no one vandalized the canvas.

cultural responses

performitorium taxi
i took this taxi during one of the nights during the performatorium show at neutral ground gallery. however, instead of going to the show, i went to a friends house. the taxi was decorated with a disco ball, curtains, and pillows. the driver offered free mouthwash, condoms, and dental dams to participants. overall, i felt that the taxi coincided with the theme of performatorium, and a free taxi service was a great accessory to any art show.

living skies film festival
this festival consisted of student films from across canada and the u.s. bryce and i were lucky enough to have our submissions nominated for best documentary. the awards gala, complete with a red carpet and paparazzi, did a good job of making the students feel like a-list stars.

pass the hat
pass the hat is a comedy show featuring local up and coming stand up comedians. the show is hosted at the exchange and features both amateur and veteran comedians. the show typically is very small and informal, which is suitable as many of the comedians are performing for the first time.

robocall rally
this rally took place in victoria park to protest the recent federal election with accusations of election fraud. to promote this event, the organizers put on a flash mob at cornwall center. this rally was put on by the same organizers that put on the occupy regina protest. because of my documentary regina:occupied, i was asked to be a photographer at this rally.
the rally being hosted at victoria park was a good way to involve the public, because many protesters with signs stood beside the street to enable drivers to honk to show their support.

film pool
this field trip to the film pool was very enlightening and relevant to be as i am a film student. this was the first time i have been to the film pool and was very impressed by the facilities, equipment, and courses offered.
unfortunately, with the governments recent tax cut, the film pool will suffer to a large degree.

personal criteque & reflection - performance piece

for this piece i attempted to use humor to engage the class. i did this because i feel that humor is an element that is not explored enough in the art world. humor can engage and entertain audiences very effectively.
in preparation for this piece, i showed the class videos that i cited as influences for my piece. this helped greatly as it showed the class the effect i wanted to achieve, and enabled them to write funnier responses.
overall, i felt my performance piece to be a great success. the class responses were very funny and i was able to get through the entire list of books before the bookstore worker hung up.

performance proposal

media: performance, participatory

equipment required: index cards, pens, mobile phone with speakerphone capabilities

for my performance piece, i will distribute index cards to the class and instruct them to write down instructions and phrases. i will then make a prank phone call to someone while working in what the cards say. class members can give me their cards at any time before or during the performance.

my main sources of influence are the "whose line" game from whose line is it anyway? and "black friday shopping prank" from impractical jokers. links to those videos are below

personal criteque & reflection - video project

my main inspiration for this piece was drawn from old disney animations. every frame of which consists of 2 separate paintings: the background painting, and the cell with characters and props. this is done to save time and resources, as a single background painting can be used for an entire scene. it would be incredibly inefficient to paint a new background for each frame. this combination of separate backgrounds and foregrounds is what inspired me to make this piece. i took this concept, and replaced the background painting with video, and the foreground cells with my own crude drawings.
my piece was changed significantly since my proposal. my original intention was to have the drawings pre-drawn on transparencies and change them along with the video.  this was compromised because i was unable to find transparencies.  my idea was changed from changing pre-drawn transparencies to drawing the pictures live and erasing them as the video changed.  despite adding to my performance, i felt that this change hurt my project. i was too rushed drawing the pictures, and if i made the videos longer i would have exceeded the time limit. if i were to do this project again, i would do the same piece, but iron out all the technical details. i would have better diffused the light from the overhead projector as to see the background videos more clearly. as previously stated, i would have used pre-drawn transparencies.  there was a great risk involved as i did not have an opportunity to practice my piece. the biggest critique i got was to practice the performance aspect ahead of time. this is a fair critique and i agree with it. overall i felt that i my piece was successful in entertaining the class. classmates appeared to be engaged and entertained, and could clearly see the vision I was trying to execute.

video project proposal

media:  digital video, still drawings
equipment required:  computer with internet access, overhead projector, transparencies

the concept for my idea is to overlap drawings onto a video background. the drawing will be made on transparencies and projected onto an already playing video. the video footage will consist of the background and the drawings will consist of the foreground.  there is an aspect of performance with this piece as i am changing the drawings myself as the video is playing. this project relates to the theme of intermedia as there are three prominent elements utilized: video, drawing, and performance. i expect the piece to run approximately 3 to 5 minutes. i do not yet have any ideas for content but i would like to explore juxtaposition of two themes.
the equipment required is a digital projector and an overhead projector. these projectors will be set up to project onto the same screen.
a challenge i expect is that the drawings won’t be visible on the video. if this problem arises, i will turn down the brightness of the video.  another challenge I will face is to make the drawings fit the moving background.
